Anzac Day

SUITABLE FLOWERS AND WREATHS FOR ANZAC DAY

Anzac Day is coming up and you might be thinking about showing some love to our fallen heroes with a floral arrangement. If you are not sure what the best and most suitable flowers and wreaths are for this important occasion, we have some good information below for you to consider. But first…

What does ANZAC stand for?

ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps.

When is ANZAC DAY?

Anzac Day is on April 25, each and every year. It is the anniversary of when the ANZAC troops first landed on the Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey, on April 25, 1915.

What does Anzac Day commemorate?

Anzac Day commemorates the men and women who served in World War 1. Many of these brave young soldiers made the ultimate sacrifice for their country and the freedoms we enjoy today. As a nation, we say “lest we forget” in remembrance of these servicemen and women; the meaning of this phrase is “it should not be forgotten”.

Flowers and Wreaths for Anzac Day

You may wish to pay tribute to an Anzac veteran, the family of an Anzac veteran, a fallen soldier or the family of a fallen soldier. You may also wish to show a sign of respect in your workplace and help the memory of Anzacs live on with a sign of remembrance. If this is the case, Anzac Day wreaths and flowers are a touching way of paying respect to those who went through the worst so that we could have the best.

You may be wondering what types of flowers and floral wreaths are suitable for Anzac Day. Well, we believe any floral gift selected with love is beautiful and worthy. However, if you want something that is specifically designed for, perfectly suited to, and traditionally used for commemorating the ANZAC soldiers on Anzac Day, then here are some options for you to consider:

  1. An Anzac Wreath

Anzac wreaths are the traditional and most commonly thought of floral arrangement for Anzac Day. They are made predominantly with Australian Native flowers; which symbolises the country for which the ANZACs served and protected. In addition, these wreaths can come with a “Lest We Forget” ribbon across them, which directly speaks to and honours the Anzac veterans. This makes them a perfect option for an Anzac Day wreath.

  1. A Teardrop Wreath (aka Laurel Wreath)

A Teardrop wreath, also known as a Laurel wreath, is a staple of Anzac Day flower traditions. The wreath’s teardrop shape symbolises the sadness we feel (or the tears we shed) for the loss of these brave young soldiers. The Laurel leaf, which is used to make up the wreath, is an ancient symbol of triumph. The Romans, for example, wore Laurel leaves around their heads. Red Poppies are also added to the wreath; more on them below.

  1. Red Poppy Flowers

A common Anzac Day flower is the red Poppy; which has become a popular addition to Anzac wreaths due to their association with World War 1. Also widely used in Remembrance Day wreaths, red Poppies are the symbolic flower of Remembrance Day (November 11) as this particular flower grew on battlefields of France and Belgium in WW1. This means that red Poppies can make the perfect wreath flowers as well as being highly suitable on their own or in a bunch for Anzac Day.

  1. Australian Natives

If you prefer something other than a wreath on Anzac Day, Australian Natives also make a perfect Anzac flower choice. Whether in a bouquet, bunch, or box, Australian Natives are the ultimate floral symbol of our land and country that the ANZACs fought to defend. Some Australian natives even appear on the Australian Coat of Arms, which is another reason why they are a highly suitable option for Anzac Day.

So there they are, suitable and appropriate flowers and floral wreaths for Anzac Day. Each contains traditional Anzac Day colours and relevant symbolism. If you would like to celebrate the Anzacs or pay tribute to a fallen soldier, the above options will serve you well. This however does not prevent you from adding a personal touch or selecting something different. If you know of a past or present serviceman or woman and you would like to gift them or their family a particular variety of flowers that you know they would prefer, then that is ok too. If there is no flower preference, sticking with the above options is always the best bet. Anzac Day flowers are often left at memorials, gravesites and RSL clubs, or given directly to the people or families they are being gifted to.
